Bongaigaon district is situated on the north-west bank of the river Brahmaputra. Bongaigaon district was formed in 1989, and is comprised of two sub-divisions :Bongaigaon and North Salmara. The district headquarter town Bongaigaon is one of the biggest railway junctions besides being an important trade centre of the State. Rapid growth of large and medium scale industries has given rise to ancillary industries at Bongaigaon. Jogighopa, situated on the south of Bongaigaon, was the site of an Ahom fort and European colony. The religious importance of Jogighopa, where caves are sanctified by different ascetics, isenhanced by the Dudhnath temple with its rockcut images of Shiva and Parbati. It is an important river port and an important business center. The Ashok Paper Mill located here is one of the major industries of the State. Abhayapuri, situated about 20 km north-east of Jogighopa is an important commercial place. Among many temples located at Abhayapuri, the temple is famous for its Goddess Abhaya made of eight metals.
