POBITORA SANCTUARY:

Pobitora Sanctuary, spread over 38.81 sq km was established as a sanctuary in 1987.

Wildlives : Rhinoceros, buffalo, wild pig, various species of duck, deer and various species of birds both land and aquatic. Situated in the Morigaon district, Pobitora is mainly famous for its Great Indian one-horned Rhinoceros. It is about 50 km from Guwahati city. Legend says that the king of Mayong gave the name Pobitora in the name of his lovely daughter who died in her teens. Its tranquil, pollution free environs and natural setting make Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary an ideal holiday escape for tourists.  

     Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary located in the floodplains of the Brahmaputra River in the Morigaon district. The extent of the protected area is between 38.81 sq km latitude 26012′ N to 26015′ N and longitude between 91059 ‘E to 92005’, E Pobitora was originally the pastoral reserve of former Nagaon district, during the 1961-62 flight light The sight of a Rhinoceros unicornis.

     In 1971, the government declared 1584.76 hectares of reserved area (RF). Notification no. 4/ Settlement/542/54 DT November 18, 1971. The adjacent Rajamayong Hill 1191.86 hectare area also was declared RF during 1957 vied Govt. Notification no. AFS 427/54/11 DT September 20, 1957.

     In view of the importance of Rhino in the area, initial notification was issued in which total area of 3880.62 hectare land was declared as Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary RF (2776.62 hectares) and both Government included. Special land between the RF government (1104 hectares). Notification FWR / 19/87/990 DT 16 July 1987. After this, the last notification of the sanctuary was published by the government. Notification no. FRS / 19/87/153 DT was published in the Assam Gazette on March 17, 1998 and May 13, 1998. The Govt. Khas land that brought within the periphery of Sanctuary are Murkata I & II with 336.00 ha, Deeping with 40.00 ha, Thingabhanga with 176 ha and Kamarpur/Rajamayong courter Khas land with an area of 552 ha.

    The natural boundary of the Pobitora wildlife sanctuary is the Garanga Beel on the south and the river Brahmaputra on the North, rest of the boundary are artificial and surrounded by 27 villages. Significantly, the PA is free from human habitation.

BEST TIME TO VISIT:

    The best time to visit Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is from November to February, because the atmosphere around that time is pleasant during the day and cold in the night. During the months of December-January, people need to take adequate woollens due to extreme cold. The monsoon period should be strictly avoided because this area is flooded with floods and roads are almost impossible to travel

HOW TO REACH:

Air: Flights Are Available From All Major Domestic Airports In India For Guwahati. From There, You Can Rent A Taxi To The Poetter Wildlife Sanctuary.

Rail: The Nearest Railway Is In Jagiroad, Which Is Well Connected To Guwahati. With Jagiroad, You Can Take Public Buses Or Taxi.

Road: From Guwahati, The Pobitora Is A 2-Hour Ride Through A Narrow Road. If You Are Coming From Kaziranga On Nh 37 Then Take The Path In Jagiroad For Mayang. Buses Are Available From Adabari Bus Station To Chamata In Guwahati. Take A Public Bus From Chamata To Kolangpur And Take An Auto Rickshaw In The Sanctuary. Alternatively, You Can Take A Bus From Guwahati To Morigaon And Take A Bus From Morigaon Till The Sanctuary.

There Is Another Road From Guwahati To Mayang Via Chandrapur. His Road Is The Smallest Of Guwahati And Connects Guwahati With Upper Assam Through Morigaon.

WHERE TO STAY

     There is only one place to stay in that area, which is a privately run hotel located near the main gateway of the Sanctuary. Alternatively, you can search for accommodation in Guwahati, which is very close to the wildlife sanctuary and offers more variety and choice.

ACTIVITIES:

     An elephant ride and jeep safari can be enjoyed in the park.

Things to do: 

  • Elephant and jeep ride in the morning and evening is the high point of the day.
  • Pobitora bird life is very rich with many unique resident birds. Their number has been increased by the migrants in winter. Census conducted in January 2012 showed that there were 26 species of birds in Pobitora. There were about 100 cranes, and about 5000 migratory birds, including about 7,000 resident birds. Other reports and websites suggest that there are 375 species of birds in it.
  • If visiting a day trip, enjoy bird life there and also go around the wildlife sanctuary. It is a pleasant place to walk.
  • Huduk is a small place to enjoy a picnic near the hanging bridge and children’s playground. Local visitors can add picnics with elephant rides and enjoy spectacular views of Pobitora

     The Pobitora Resort near the wildlife sanctuary is the only place serving food.

ITINERARY:

     Pobitora Park is best combined with the visit of Kaziranga National Park. Arrive at 6:30 in the sanctuary and take an elephant ride or jeep ride to the park and spend 2-3 hours in search of natural treasures. After this, proceed to Kaziranga National Park.

TIPS:

     The park searches itself in the crowd during the weekend and the holiday season, so try to get early to book an elephant ride due to being in short supply during the extreme weather.

Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary

     The Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the oldest sanctuary of Assam.. Garampani sanctuary spread over 6.05 sq km was recognised as a forest reserve in 1952.  The Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary is located within the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council area. This sanctuary is famous for hot water springs and home land for Hoolock Gibbons and Golden Langurs, The sanctuary is rich in its bio-diversity. Some rare birds can be seen in Garampani Wildlife sanctuary. Garapani in the local language means ‘hot water’ and wildlife sanctuary is famous for its warm springs and waterfalls by this name.

     The Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary is full of rare and endangered flora and fauna. The atmosphere of this sanctuary is moist tropical. The vegetation of saturation is tropical semi-evergreen. The Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary offers accommodation for a wide variety of wild animals and birds.

Pabhoi Sanctuary: Pabhoi sanctuary, spread over 49 sq km

is famous as the habitat of elephants and wild buffaloes. Situated in Lakhimpur district, Pabhoi is a sanctuary, which is created exclusively for the protection ofthe magnificent wild water buffalo. Wildlives: Rhinoceros, elephant, tiger, various species of birds – both land and aquatic.

Burachapori Wildlife Sanctuary: Burachapori (an old sandbank) situated on the south bank of the river Brahmaputra in Sonitpur district. The area is 44.06 sq km It is considered to be the ideal habitat for Bengal Florican. Various species of migratory birds are also seen in this sanctuary. Other attractions are the Great Indian One-horned Rhinoceros, Asiatic buffalo, wild boar, otter, civet, cat, leopard cat, barking deer etc. Various reptiles and fishes are also found here.

 Laokhowa Sanctuary: Laokhowa Sanctuary spread over 70.13 sq km. It harbours wildlife species like wild buffalo, swamp deer, duck, cormorant etc. It is only 25 km from Nagaon town. Various species of birds and reptiles are also found in Laokhowa.

 Bornadee Sanctuary: Barnadee sanctuary, stretching over 26.22 sq km was recognised as a sanctuary in 1981. This sanctuary famous for pigs, monkeys, buffaloes, bears, leopards and many types of birds.

 Sonai-Rupai Sanctuary: This wildlife sanctuary, 220 sq km in area, is situated in the Sonitpur district. Extending along the Himalayan foothills it offers magnificent view of both scenic beauty and wildlife. The sanctuary is the home of elephant, Indian bison, deer and a variety of hill birds.
